The Four Basic Systems Of Yoga - Part 1
Various forms of meditation and inner concentration have been developed by most cultures and systems devoted to human health, harmony and evolution. The concept of coming into contact with an inner power, an inner voice, an inner knowledge or an inner guidance is common to all spiritual systems and religions.
These techniques, however, were used in the past mostly by the priests, monks, mystics and those with deeper inclination for spiritual growth. The most scientifically developed and effective system of inner concentration is probably the system called Yoga.
There is much confusion concerning the meaning of the word, and what exactly a person who practices yoga does; why he does it and what effect it has on him and his environment. Some believe that it is another religion. Others claim that it is a science of human harmony, while still others praise its wonderful healing powers on the body and mind.
The truth, of course, for each one of us is relative depending on our experiences, childhood programming, desires and needs. I will express to you the truth as I see it after 25 years of studying and practicing yoga and 20 years of teaching it. My association with yoga has also brought me into contact with thousands of other teachers and students of this system in America, Europe, England, Australia, India, the Middle East and Greece.
YOGA IS NOT A RELIGION
It is a science of human development and improvement that can be used in any religious setting, and along with any particular dogma. It is a system of techniques designed to aid an individual in creating a world of inner and outer harmony, health and happiness.
These techniques will help each to benefit more deeply from his own religious path. A Christian will become a better Christian, a Christian in spirit and not only in name. A Hindu will become a better Hindu, a Moslem a better Moslem.
The same techniques of yoga, which will help a Christian focus more deeply, and clearly on the Christ, will help a Hindu to focus more deeply and one-pointedly on Krishna or Rama.
Yoga embraces the concept that there is ONE GOD who is worshiped through all the religious paths. It never asks a man to change his religious beliefs or worship some other God.
Yoga has no particular form of God or type of worship. Yoga is a system of techniques, which help each man and woman worship more efficiently, independent of his or her religion.
Yoga is like a car that is at the disposal of all. I can use it to go where I want, and you to go where you want. The same car takes each of us to where we want. Each chooses his own direction.
YOGA IS NOT RETREATING
FROM THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF LIFE
Rather it is a preparation of the body and mind so that one can perform his duties more efficiently, more happily, more harmoniously, and more creatively. Any employer who would make a study of the efficiency, honesty and consistency of his employees who do yoga, would find that these qualities are present in them to a greater degree than the average of the society.
WHAT, THEN, IS YOGA?
There are many ways to describe yoga. It is something different to each person according to his needs and goals.
1. It is a Science of Human Development, offering techniques for the harmonization and mastery of the body, bioenergy, senses and the mind.
2. It is a way of life which creates a state of inner harmony, as well as harmony with the environment around us. These guidelines for living are similar to the Ten Commandments of the Bible and will be discussed later.
3. It is a method for the transcendence of human suffering, leading to freedom from illness, pain and unhappiness.
4. It is a system for the development of the inherent mental and supermental powers, which are at present latent in man. (We use only one tenth of our brain - evolution has not stopped). We continue to evolve and yoga is an efficient system for accelerating human evolution.
5. It is a path to Self - Knowledge beyond the changing reality of our bodies and personalities.
6. Its ultimate goal is the transcendence of the mind and union with God, the Universal Spirit living in all beings.
WHY DO PEOPLE START PRACTICING YOGA?
People turn to yoga for various reasons according to their needs, issues, problems and goals in life.
1. The majority start because they have some physical or emotional problem such as headaches, high blood pressure, spinal problems, arthritis, constipation, drug dependency, insomnia, nervous tension, fears, anxieties; or they may have lost a loved one, or their wealth, or their job, or have some other difficulty in life. Yoga gives them a chance to help themselves.
It is not a drug that someone can take. Each person learns to develop his inner strength, to care for his body and mind properly, to cure himself and to develop his ability to face life, and to enjoy it.
2. Others start because they simply want to learn to relax and be at peace with themselves. They enjoy the inner peace that they feel during and after the practice of the various techniques. They find that when they develop a daily discipline, that this peace and sense of well being carries over into most of the day. They begin to change their attitude towards life.
3. Others come to improve the quality of their bodies and minds. They do not have any specific problems, but are interested in greater control over their bodies and minds. They develop this increasing control through regular practice of the techniques. As they progress they are given more difficult techniques. It is similar to studying any other subject. Whether learning to drive a car, to play the piano, to cook a good meal, to run a business, to do scientific research; there are techniques that can help us learn to master those activities more efficiently. The same is true with the mastery of the body and mind. There are techniques that can make the process much easier for us.
4. Fewer people come for spiritual growth, in order to improve their character, to develop the ability to love more purely, to increase their self-knowledge, and in general, to become free from the limitations of their bodies and their minds. Eventually they feel an increasing need for contact with the Divine. They want to feel the Divine in every moment, to break through the illusion of this temporary material reality and discover the Absolute Truth. They seek enlightenment and union with God.
5. Others may start out of curiosity and if they are not then attracted by one of the above mentioned motives, they soon give up the effort.
All motives are acceptable and one motive may lead to another. Also we often function from a combination of motives.

Balance is essential in all maters concerning your food and no excess should be made. Do not totally eliminate certain food items from your menu and remember that diversity is the key to an equilibrated and satisfactory diet.

Back Pain Yoga Posture

Special back pain yoga posture choices can dramatically improve the flexibility and lengthen the natural reach of your spine. Back injuries often arise from just bending to pick something up. It is important to identify and use the appropriate postures safely and effectively. Deep breathing warms the body to enhance the benefit of these exercises. The benefit of yoga becomes evident when one realizes back pain sends more people to the doctor than any other ailment except the common cold.
Most damage occurs in the last two lumbar discs often due to mechanical strains are from overstretching ligaments and soft tissue. Take time to understand the cause of your pain. Is it tight and/or weak muscles, obesity, emotional stress, lack of full movement in the shoulders and hips or just poor posture? Learn about your back pain.
Yoga posture selection will come from that understanding. Stretching with yoga increases blood flow allowing nutrients in and toxins out to improve overall nourishment of the muscles and soft tissues in the lower back. Take it slow and work gently toward aligned flexibility. Relax your head and neck. When one area of the body is out of alignment, it affects every other.
Stand with feet flat on the floor or mat a comfortable distance apart. Facing forward pull the arms up. Alternate the arms to expand up and s-t-r-e-t-c-h. Repeat several times. Shake out the arms and legs. Roll the shoulders and wiggle the feet. Inhale as you bring the arms straight by your ears with fingers reaching to the sky. Exhale as you bend over with palms down leading your arms to hang gently from the waste.
Inhale as you slowly roll up and stand head erect arms relaxed at your side. Take a moment to rub your lower vertebrae with the back of each hand. Bend down on one knee and place your hands on the floor. Position the other leg to lift up into an arch walk your hands out to Down Dog. Stretch the arms and legs as you pull up into a V at the hip. Stay there for a minute or so. You'll soon see why these back pain yoga posture choices work so well!
From Down Dog, walk your hands in and bring your knees one at a time comfortably to the floor in Cat Pose. S-t-r-e-t-c-h the spine and arch the back like a cat. Tuck your head under. Inhale as you release the arch into a bowed back. Arch the head and s-t-r-e-t-c-h the neck upward. Repeat this pattern several times. Now lie on the floor relaxed face down. Inhale as you slowly lift your feet and arms stretch out to gently arch the back bringing your chest high. This is a modification of Cobra Pose to strengthen the back. Repeat. That repetition will help fight back pain. Yoga postures can be used as a way to fight off future injury, as well as to reduce currently experienced pain.
Dahnhak yoga began in Korea several thousand years ago to develop the mind and body in an area called Land of the Morning Calm. It was revived by Dr. Ichi Lee in 1980. "Dahn" means energy, and "Hak" means study. Dahnhak is the study of energy (Ki, Chi) and how to use it to restore mind/body communication. A cardinal back pain yoga posture of Dahnhak is to smile.
If you experience back pain, yoga posture choices can provide a great deal of relief and might just bring a smile to your face at the same time!

Yoga And Pregnancy
If you're pregnant and are already in yoga classes, don't be afraid to take a break from your current classes or to take a class that is less strenuous. Even if you haven't gone public with your pregnancy yet, you should have a confidential talk with your instructor let him or her know of your pregnancy, the instructor will then be able to assist you with less strenuous postures or teach you poses that you aren't doing that will help you.
If you are new to yoga and are looking for a low impact way of exercising the best thing to do is to look for a prenatal yoga class. These classes are designed for pregnant parishioners and you can start them as early in your pregnancy as you want. If you are having morning sickness, you may want to wait until that passes and that usually is the second trimester.
If you have been practicing yoga for a while, you still may find your regular classes seem to be too intense for you. Prenatal classes may seem too easy, so at this point you will need to decide which class you should take on a given day depending on how you feel.
The solution might also be to include some prenatal poses that have been adapted into your regular routine. If you are in a class, your yoga instructor may help you with special poses developed for pregnancy and your changing body. When you enter the second or third trimester, you may find that prenatal classes are more suited for your body and its changing shape.
If you do Yoga with videotape, you should buy a prenatal video. Some of the recommended poses are ones that open the hip such as Pigeon, Triangle, Warrior II, and Knee to Ankle.
Second Trimester?
Are you a Yoga enthusiast and want to continue to do your practice while pregnant? Yoga can continue to be practiced during your second trimester with just a few precautions.
By the second trimester, your morning sickness should be over and should be feeling better.
If you haven't yet started a yoga yet and wish too, and you are in luck, "now is the perfect time to start".
Always contact your health care provider before starting any new exercise program. This is a good rule of thumb even if you aren't pregnant.
Start with finding a class with an excellent and experienced instructor. Many women enter yoga for the first time during their pregnancy so don't worry that you will be the only new pregnant woman in class. Talk with your friends and get references for and instructor.
If you are already practicing yoga, there is no need to give up your classes if you feel strong enough to do them. You can incorporate your own adaptations to the poses when fitting. As your belly grows, the more adaptations you will need to make. You will want to take any inversion pose to the wall if it poses a risk of falling. If you aren't comfortable doing these poses, then it's all right to give your body permission to skip them. One that you can practice safely is the Legs Up the Wall Pose.
If you practice at home, you still might consider going to a prenatal class at least once or twice a week. You will be able to connect with other pregnant women there and know you are not alone in what you are going through.
Some Yoga Poses you will want to avoid during your second trimester or at least adapt them to your growing belly. Deep twists from the belly compress all of your internal organs, including the uterus. You can continue to do the twists, just do them gently from the shoulders instead of the belly.
Of course avoid any jumping or poses that require back bends. Abdominal strengtheners should be avoided, as they need to be softened in preparation for birth. Of course, lying on the belly should not be practiced once you begin to show. It will probably be too uncomfortable for you anyway.
Practice the Birthing Breath, deep inhalations in through the nose and exhaling slowly through the mouth.
Third Trimester?
In the third trimester of your pregnancy, everything becomes more difficult to do. Tying your shoes, climbing upstairs and even turning over in bed can become a chore. Yoga will become more difficult and you should use more caution but there isn't any reason you can't continue to practice yoga up to your due date.
For those that were working and are now on maternity leave, you might just now be finding time to do prenatal yoga. You will still benefit from doing gentle yoga stretches and poses. If you are attending a class, be sure your teacher knows when you are due. Remember, now is the time to take it easy. It isn't the time to be an overachiever. Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program or if you have questions about which prenatal yoga is best for you.
If you are listening to your body, it will tell you what you can and can't do. Continue to stay in touch with your body, allow your body to take it easy. It's a good idea to continue practice breathing, as this will help you during the birth process.
Some poses that are recommended for the third trimester are hip openers such as Pigeon, Warrior II, Triangle, and Knee to Ankle. All four Cat-Cow positions will also help by preparing the baby for birth. They will help the baby get in proper position, head down and it's back turned toward your belly.
Of course, the same poses you adapted during your second trimester must be practiced with extra caution. No jumping, or twisting from the belly, deep back bends or anything that involves strengthening the abdomen. Goes without saying, there shouldn't be any poses that need you to lie on your belly.
One of the more important aspects to remember when you are practicing Yoga during pregnancy is to control your breathing and listen to your body. Practicing yoga and listening to your body will help prepare mentally for the birth process. As you learn to be in the moment and quiet your inner body, Yoga will help with that as well as your breathing exercises.
Pregnancy doesn't have to be an obstacle in your practice of Yoga. In fact, it can be a vital part of your prenatal routine. With poses that are designed for pregnancy and incorporating routines that will help you to have an easier birth. Some routines you will find you are unable to do. If you are unsure of the poses, listen to your body. It will tell you which ones that are too much for you in time in your pregnancy.
So, don't be afraid to continue your Yoga practice. It may mean that you will have an easier delivery and a faster recovery after birth. It also should make getting into shape after birth easier as well.

Facts About Successful Yoga Teachers (part 1)
Should a Yoga teacher take money for classes? How do you define success for a Yoga teacher? Is it your contribution to the common good? Is it by producing successful teachers? Is it by technical prowess? Is it by how many students you have? Or, is it a combination of these factors?
First things first: Are you "selling Yoga?" If you accept a fee for teaching Yoga, no matter how small or large, you are selling Yoga. If you do not like my frank approach to this issue, then teach Yoga for free. This is not a problem, and that is good Karma Yoga.
However, do not open next to a commercially aggressive Yoga studio or ashram. If you decide to do this, you will see your finances "crash and burn" - while your students flock to the wealthy Guru down the street. Yoga students often think that free Yoga is "junk."
Once upon a time, I taught free Yoga too. It is not easy to explain a passion to your family, which drains your finances and challenges the quality of your life on a daily basis. If you keep teaching Yoga for free, you will lose a lot of sleep, before you live on the street, with the homeless, or finally, start charging for Yoga lessons.
It is amusing when very wealthy Yoga Gurus claim Yoga is not for making money. My answer: "Excuse me, how did you acquire all that wealth?" Why would a rich Yoga Guru lead anyone to think that taking a payment for teaching Yoga is wrong?
This is why we should appreciate Bikram Choudry's candid remarks. He says what he thinks and makes no secret about living a life of luxury, due to teaching Yoga. At least, he is honest about his ideas, and he is not a hypocrite.
Therefore, if you accept payments from your students, be honest with yourself. You can always use the money to help others, but you need to pay your overhead costs, eat, and sleep with a roof over your head, first.
If you still feel bad about taking money for teaching Yoga, please open a studio down the street from my North Providence location. We will regularly donate toward your meals at the local soup kitchens. I hope you clearly see my point. So, please do not listen to anyone who tells you that taking money for teaching Yoga is wrong.
Whether a Yoga teacher is rich or poor, a successful Yoga teacher does not worry about money - the universe will supply it.

Meditate To Unlock Your Hidden Potential - Part 1

Meditation is often misunderstood by those who do not practice it. Very often, I hear meditation referred to as, "altered states of consciousness." That sounds more like intoxicants, rather than bringing clarity to a cluttered mind. Without going too deep into what meditation is, or is not, let's focus on one of the many things a daily meditation practice can do for you.
Meditation is commonly seen in many Yoga classes, but it has been practiced by a variety of cultures, including Roman Catholic priests, as well as Japanese Samurai, who practiced a form of Zen meditation. I mention this so you can see the full spectrum of meditation and its many facets.
There are many varieties and types of meditation, but the easiest form to learn is, "breath awareness meditation." Compared to many other meditation techniques, this will enable anyone to experience the benefits of meditation in much less time.
At this point, let's consider that meditation and Yoga teachers often compare the mind to a monkey. Many thoughts are running through your brain, at the same time, and it is hard to control all of your impulses - let alone, sit still and meditate. So why go through all this trouble?
Meditation has many rewards, and we will now consider one of extreme value. Through daily practice of meditation, you will release the unlimited potential of your mind. The ability to change, or alter the universe, starts as a single thought within your mind.
One human decided to harness the power of fire, and did he/she foresee the global warming effect? How could he/she imagine where we are now? This is just one of many thousands of examples of Karma
- the law of cause and effect. Therefore, one seemingly small change, of any kind, will have a ripple effect on the universe.
Some of the seeds to change the universe, rests locked up in your mind, but you have the ability to shape the future by any small changes that you make. Let's say you have a friend, family member, or associate, who cares for you deeply, but, up to now, you have always taken it for granted. Can you imagine what would happen if you take the time to groom that relationship? The answer is you would have a loyal ally and all you had to show was kindness or appreciation.
You have the ability to alter your own personality and affect the world around you. Hopefully, your personality will always continue to change for the better; if so, this will alter everyone around you for the best.

Do Yoga Clothes Make A Difference?
Simply put, the very best yoga clothes are those that allow you to move freely and prevent instances of distraction and disturbance while you practice. They should feel good on your skin and be free of irritations.
Believe it or not, yoga clothes are an extremely important accessory because it sets your mood. If you do not have the perfect set of clothes, your day of practicing will not be as effective.

In practicing yoga, there is no requirement in choosing your clothes. If you want to show off some skin, it is up to you. If you have a body with good shape, you can wear fitting shirts and pants.
If you do not have that figure, but think that you have the guts, no one will scold you. After all, you are the one who carries your body as long as you can handle it. Here are the common things you need when looking for in yoga clothing.
Yoga Tops: first thing you should consider in choosing a yoga top is that it should not fall in your face. Tops are designed to let you move freely and not be distracted when doing the exercise. If you are going to wear tee shirts, it should not be that long and should not cover the lower part of your body.
This is important in checking the alignment of your lower body because you can see whether your knees and ankles are aligned properly. Most women wear sports bras so that in doing some movements, they are sure that it holds them securely and prevent chances of falling out when stretching.
Yoga Pants: Choosing your yoga pants is quite delicate. The texture and surface of some pants may not give you a comfortable feel. The length of the pants is one of the things to consider in choosing it. Some pants are long that it reaches your ankles. If this is not comfortable to you, you should wear pants that are below your knees. This allows you to move freely.
Yoga Shorts: this is a good choice if you are practicing hot yoga or known as the Bikram Yoga. This type of yoga is done in a room at a high temperature. Wearing shorts will let go of the heat inside your body.
Choosing your yoga clothes does not mean that it has to be expensive. What is important is that you feel good and comfortable deep inside.

Stress Management Through Yoga
Stress, almost all are victim of this drastic term. People from all occupations are facing stress in their life in one way or the other. In this article I would like to summarize the causes and cure for stress through natural therapy called "YOGA". But before coming to that point we should have clear understanding of what exactly the stress is. Stress is usually a mental pressure exerted due to fatigue or excessive work. It is also caused from worrying about the work or happenings in the past, present or future. Suppose there is a businessmen exporting his products to several countries, his business is doing fine and growing but somehow a situation comes and he finds his business on decline though there might be some cause for this and it could be short lived making his business to bloom once again, but within this short span the person develops stress which may lead to severe mental hazards.
In the modern world we face stress in every sphere and every step of our life, whether we are in schools, colleges, offices etc. Students face stress due to exams, serviceman face stress due to huge pile of pending work etc. As a result people often practice medications like taking sedatives, narcotics and tranquilizers (medicines to cure anxiety) which calm the mind but in future it creates serious other maladies.
But still there is a therapy which is purely natural and is considered to be the best weapon against stress and that is "YOGA". Yoga is the ancient mantra for sound health and also to retain juvenility to a great extent. It has been practiced by several Rishi-Munis in ancient India and now has become a major concern among the modern genre too.
So back to stress management, Yoga provides a unique way of managing stress through Prayanama (A breathing technique), in this technique an individual do slow and steady breathing - like inhaling through his one nostril and exhaling through other. Besides there are fast breathing movements like intake of air through nostrils and exhaling through mouth at fast pace, this way air is passed properly through blood capillaries and the person feels himself / herself in light mode i.e. he / she feels that there is no burden over their mind and soul.
Dhyana (Meditation) is also a good method of controlling stress, in this part of Yoga a person sits in a posture (usually in relaxing mode) and concentrate his / her mind over one point with eyes closed. The mind is concentrated upto an extent when an individual feels that he / she has no interaction with the surroundings, infact the mind reaches in a neutral stage thereby relieving mental exhaustion. Hence yoga provides the best cure to this serious ailment which is disrupting the life of millions of people daily. Anyone practicing yoga daily is rarely suspected to stress, as yoga creates the mind and body immune to stress.
Finally Yoga has and is proving itself as "Stress Management Tool" and now a days it is being used in Western world too as a major alternative to the offensive allopathic drugs.

Teach Your Child To Live For Maximum Potential

At times, everyone feels a little depressed about life, andchildren are no exception. Just like you, children oftenexperience "the same old grind." They get up for school, daycare, or camp to travel the same road each weekday. Somechildren even look forward to weekends in the same way theirparents do.
How can you put some excitement into life and teach your childto be successful? Sometimes, parents have to be spontaneous andbreak the routine up a bit for "family time." Make it a point toeat together and spend quality time doing new things.
Never say negative things about your life or how boring life isfor you. Children can really tune into this, and they alwayscopy their parents. They reflect negative thinking and can holdthemselves back by worrying about the risk of failure, just likean adult. Instead, teach them about the endless opportunitiesthat arise in every day life.
Life is full of challenges, and your child has to learn toovercome the fear of failure. This is where you come in - bymeasuring your child's progress. You should always point towardhis, or her, past successes for positive reinforcement.
Remember the story of the "Tortoise and the Hare?" Teach yourchild that slow and steady always finishes the race. As anadult, you know that finishing anything is a "bench mark" alongthe road to progress. A child will give up on a challenge, whenthey are too far out of their "comfort zone."
Giving up is a last resort. For example: Look down the road atthe many challenges your child will face in college, militaryservice, or at work. You want to establish a "track record" ofsuccess now.
Even when challenges and problems have your child in a state offear, you are obligated to encourage your child to move forwardand do their "personal best." Every successful person has had toface their own fear, in order to see the endless dailyopportunities that life has to offer.
Teach your child that life is full of excitement - by making thechoices of exploring and trying new things, as long as they arereasonably safe activities. The experience of learning is moreimportant than the chance of failure.
The end result will be that your child has positive memories ofaccomplishment, and the knowledge that he or she can alwayscount on you.

How To Teach Anger Management To Your Child
Most of us recognize the continuing escalation of violencearound us, due to intolerance, and many of us blame it onsomebody else. Parents teach their children, all the time, andwhen one of us displays "road rage," while our child is in thecar, we teach a brand new skill set.
Although, road rage is inappropriate behavior, at any time, andcan get you killed, most children who are exposed to it, willduplicate the actions of their parents, when they are old enoughto drive.
So the first step, is to set an example and, possibly, use someof these ideas, for yourself. Studies show that anger causesatherosclerosis, the build-up of plaques in the arteries, thatis a major factor in developing high blood pressure, heartdisease, heart attack, and premature death.
Also, during a "temper tantrum," adrenaline and blood pressurelevels rise beyond normal. This behavior is more dangerous toparent's bodies due to the normal "wear and tear" alreadyexisting.
Now, you may be convinced that anger can kill you, but let'slook at one more factor. You could hurt someone else, findyourself in prison, or get yourself killed due to incitingviolence against others. There are other people, who are havingdifficulty dealing with anger management too.
Back to our children: All children need exercise and they arenaturally full of energy. Look at any other species, and youwill see the same behavior. Should we drug our dogs, cats, andparrots, when they display youthful exuberance?
Children have to run, jump, and shout. So let them play in theback yard, in a park, and get them involved in sports, Yoga,dance, or martial arts. You will never regret letting your childenjoy life, constructively learn in the process, and just be akid.
For all of us, there is a time to be quiet and a time to shout.Children need years to learn this, so let's keep them active inthe process. Keep them away from the television, Internet, andvideo games, except for "rainy days." Coloring books, boardgames, and reading are also good activities for rainy days.
A heavy bag is a great tool for letting anger out. You and yourchild can use it together. You can learn to punch and kick it,for the aerobic benefits, as well. If you have a friend who is aboxer or martial artist, you could get some pointers. After justa 20-minute session, I guarantee you, and your child, will havedealt with anger - there will be little, if any, left.
Teach your child forgiveness, through your own example. I am notasking you to let people "walk all over you." However, letgrudges go; life is really too short to keep a feud going.
You can also control your child's "circle of friends," just bygetting him or her involved in, group activities such as: Leaguesports, dance, yoga, or martial arts. The parents who have theirchildren in these activities want the best for them and arewilling to sacrifice their time, or money, to get it.
This will keep your child busy, happy, and active, with apre-selected crowd of friends, who have parents that care. Thisis a "win - win" situation and well worth the investment.
This is not to say that every child you run into, at thesefunctions, will be perfect, but in the above mentionedactivities, all of them are structured, adult-supervised, andrules for behavior are in place. This form of organizationbecomes a habit, your child will follow these guidelines, andbring them home.
Here is another idea that will help. Have your child take careof a pet or a plant, every day. Children love to care foranimals or plants, but they still need supervision. The resultof this will be, your child learns compassion.
Compassion will keep anger "in check" every time.

Delta Force To New Orleans
If you are wondering why the United States can send troopsaround the world, but failed to respond to a domestic emergencyin a timely manner, you are not alone. Expect the lack ofplanning for emergency relief, in the aftermath and devastationleft behind by Hurricane Katrina, to be the subject of a federalinvestigation.
The National Guard arrived in large numbers on Friday, September2nd, but how is it possible that the poor people of New Orleanswere left four days to fend for themselves? Doesn't the UnitedStates have a rapid deployment force? Yes, we do, and many largemilitary installations are within an hour of the Gulf Coast,when traveling by air. Many more military bases are within twohours of the devastation.
On Sunday, August 28th - one day before Hurricane Katrina landedon the Gulf Coast it was labeled a category 5 hurricane. So,what was the emergency rescue plan? Was anybody planning anyrescue efforts on Sunday night?
As luck would have it, Katrina turned out to be a category 4Hurricane.
Can you imagine the devastation, if this storm hadbeen worse? Some parts of New Orleans are 10 feet below sealevel and a system of levees, normally, keeps the surroundingwater out.
Referring to the Federal response for relief help, New OrleansMayor Ray Nagin said, "They don't have a clue what's going ondown here." Mayor Nagin's remarks are an understatement.Logistically speaking, this is not as complicated as a reliefeffort to Somalia.
President Bush said, "A lot of people are working hard to helpthose who've been affected. The results are not acceptable." Heis not kidding; if we can airlift food and weapons toAfghanistan, why is delivery to the Gulf Coast and New Orleans aproblem?

Fight Stress With Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is one of the most popular forms of Yoga and is widely practiced across the world by lay persons and Yogis alike. Hatha Yoga considers the physical form or the human body to be the vessel for the soul, and lays a great deal of importance on physical discipline.
The physical discipline is achieved through 'asanas' (postures), 'pranayam' (breathing exercises) and meditation. By carrying out these activities, the body is moulded into a perfect receptacle for spiritual elements.
The 'asanas' and 'pranayamas' are used to power the energy channels called the 'nadis'. The 'asanas' help to develop will power, concentration and self-withdrawal, and enable the practitioner of Hatha Yoga to move closer towards Samadhi, which is the Yogic term for bliss and inner peace.
The 'asanas', which are well thought-out physical exercises, make the human body more supple and fitter. They are designed to make the muscles stronger, energize your key organs, improve mind-body coordination and to give the mind the sufficient amount of strength to stay cool and relaxed in times of need.
'Pranayama' is an equally important aspect to the practice of Hatha Yoga. It is through these breathing exercises that you activate and channel the vital life energy (termed as 'Prana'). When this vital energy travels from the base of the spine to the top of the head, you can achieve Samadhi. The benefits of achieving this state of bliss are somewhat obvious. This canalization of 'Prana' is also termed as Kundalini Yoga, which is one of the many branches of Yoga that has originated from Hatha Yoga.
The term 'Hatha' has been derived from the words 'Ha' and 'Tha'; 'Ha' means 'Sun' and 'Tha' means 'Moon'. In Yoga, the sun is perceived as radiating positive energy while the moon radiates negative energy. Thus, Hatha Yoga is based on the principle of a harmonizing union between the pairs of opposites (positive and negative). Therefore, taken together, the term 'Hatha' stands for 'union of force'.
The prolonged practice of Hatha Yoga can help you recognize that a divine light shines within you. This awareness will make you stronger, more flexible and relaxed. The relaxation exercises involved in practicing Hatha Yoga opens the 'nadis' allowing your spiritual energy to flow freely. All sorts of benefits are received when this happens.
Hatha Yoga is a great way to rid yourself of stress, tension and anxiety. It also helps you improve your overall health and fitness. All in all Hatha Yoga is a great tool to develop your inner self whilst toning, conditioning and relaxing your outer self.

Yoga In Practice: Teaching Yoga
When most people consider the idea of teaching Yoga, they usually perceive the superficial physical requirements of a Hatha Yoga instructor. There are many styles of Yoga, and Hatha Yoga is just one of them. In fact, within the sub-styles of Hatha Yoga, there are a number of "gentle" styles. So, being really flexible, young, and having the body of a super model, are not required in order to teach Yoga.
The above attributes can be used to your advantage, if you have them, but let's go over a prime ingredient within all Yoga teachers. "In a nut shell," it is the passion to help others. This is the common denominator among Yoga instructors, regardless of which style of Yoga is taught. Teaching others the benefits of Yoga becomes a "calling" for students who aspire to teach Yoga.
A Yogic lifestyle will improve any person's life. Interestingly, a quality life is founded upon positive thought. Therefore, Yoga has "all the bases covered," when it comes down to helping people.
When you look at yourown life - reflect on the following questions. How do you want to be remembered? Do you feel complete satisfaction in your accomplishments, so far? What do you stand for?
How we are remembered is through our actions. This relates to Karma Yoga: Union by selfless service. When we help people, that action helps people who we never meet because a single action creates a chain reaction. Just look at all the coincidences that add up to you reading these words, at this moment.
What we accomplish in life is, for the most part, based upon our own actions. There are exceptions to this such as: poverty, illness, and bad luck. However, the person who never gives up will realize achievement, success, and goal realization. When we stop trying, we "short circuit" our potential.
Satisfaction with your life depends upon finding your purpose (dharma). When you have found your purpose in life, you are living a fulfilled life. Whatever you do in life, helping friends, family, and associates will give you the greatest satisfaction.
If you are feeling incomplete, at this time, write down your passions, reflect on them, and notice that one will stir an overriding desire within you. This is most likely your dharma. When we leave this life, it is gratifying to know that we helped people along the way, as this also gives us a deeper sense of purpose.
Getting back to teaching Yoga - there are many excuses to avoid becoming a Yoga teacher, but when you feel the calling, all you have to do is share the gift of Yoga with others to find out if that is your purpose in life.

Yoga In Practice: Ten Solutions For Depressed Yoga Students (part 2)
As you know, anyone can feel a little depressed now and then - Yoga students are no different. Here are four more methods to help Yoga students with mild forms of depression.
Get away from being self-centered: There is no reason to isolate ourselves; we are interconnected with all things, people, nature, the universe, and God. We need to be in harmony with our life and everything we come into contact with.
Accomplish what you can in a day and sleep on the rest. The universe will still keep running after our lives are up, so let the universe worry about it. Stop thinking in terms of "I" and you will have much less burdens to carry around.
Set Goals: Life would not mean much without goals, so write them down and go after them. These should be "heart felt" goals that are morally sound and yield gratification. This one solution stops many Yoga practitioners from feeling depression most of the time.
Appreciate the little things: Look at what you already have and do not worry about what you don't have. A rich man who worries about what he does not have is living in self-created poverty. His wealth could be put to something useful, but he dwells on protecting his assets and worries about acquisitions.
What a shame this is, but it is not an isolated case. The rich struggle to find love, real friends, and rewarding relationships. So, "be careful what you wish for."
Food: The irony is that food sustains life and can also cause death. One of my teachers pointed this fact out to me, when I was about nine years of age. My reaction was amazement, at first, but then reality settled in. Most people are in denial about food, and this is obvious by the obesity around us. Our waistline has to be monitored, constantly, throughout adulthood.
To keep it simple, Yoga students should adhere to a sattvic diet. Put limits on caffeine, alcohol, and sugars. There are times when most of us fall short, but still maintain awareness about what you eat and drink.
Of course, water should be consumed in fair quantities at all times.
Eight glasses per day of quality water will aid your skin, digestion, elimination, muscles, vital organs and more. Water consumption will also give your skin a youthful appearance. Isn't this also why we practice Yoga?

Baby Yoga And Me

Having carried a sizable bump around for a very long, very hotsummer, I really wasn’t in the mood for a work out.
As Gwyneth Paltrow and all of my other coat-hanger thincelebrity peers snaked their way, all skin and bone about thetabloids, I scowled and knew that, even if the mood did evertake me as I sat covered in powered milk, I would just neverhave the time to get back in shape now that I always had my babyin toe. After all, its not as if I could balance Harry on therowing machine as I made for the nearest treadmill – I didn’tthink they’d like that down at the health club.
I did try the gym. Once. Inspired by Gwynnies size eight flatchestedness I did deposit Harry at my mums’, and went for oneswim amongst the well toned – but my self-esteem could just notcut it. Having been a large pregnant woman and having had adifficult birth, my body was not as it should be, and I didn’tstay for long. I’m sure no one cared about my having varicoseveins now, but I did, and I suddenly felt very much like a mum,and nothing else. Loosing faith in the idea that I’d ever have awaist again, I pooled my NCT friends to see if they had any tipson how to regain a good shape, without the embarrassment.
There was no way I was doing yoga. It turned out after speakingto the girls that they already had a fitness plan, and weremeeting to go to some yoga class the following week. I’d onlyever seen yoga on television, and I wouldn’t have evenconsidered trying it pre-Harry – I was never that skinny andstealth. The women all looked like they hadn’t eaten for atleast five years, and there was no way I was ever learning howto be a ‘delicate lotus’ with all of the cellulite I’daccumulated now. I lied and told them I couldn’t get ababysitter…
Turns out you can take your little ones to baby yoga. I wasworried it would be new agey, but our first session soondispelled all the worries I had about that. Friendly and chatty,the class was only for parents, and I met a whole gaggle of newlocal mums. We chatted about our babies, their first rolls,nappies and missing socks, and Harry played merrily with theother tots that were there – something which really made mesmile as he’s an only child and I was worried that when it cameto mixing with other babies he’d wouldn’t cope. Turns out he’s abit of a socialite – that’s my boy!
A qualified baby yoga teacher, our leader, Sue, started us offwith some very simple stretches, which were fine for anyphysical type.
Her training with Birthlight means she knowsexactly what our bodies have been through, and so nothing wastoo much. I was petrified that Harry would cry when it came toincluding him in the work out (the baby isn’t put under anystress either by the way – there’s just lots of great, gentleskin to skin contact and muscle stimulation, no sun salutationsjust yet!) but he just smiled. It must feel good, after all, tohave the shouty tired woman who’s been harassing you for allthis time give you some proper, physical warmth and lavishattention.
The stimulation that babies receive doing yoga releasesendorphins in the brain, and so they clearly glow after asession, just as we do after a turn at the gym. It was great toknow he felt so cared for.
As time went on, our classes did become more adventurous. Thestretches we learned started to actively include our babies(they are fabulous weights!) and we all became far lessinhibited, and felt happy to move onto the more complexmovements.
To calm the babies, Sue introduced music into the classes, whichsoothed them no end – in all the time I’ve been going now, Idon’t think we’ve ever had a baby have to be taken out forcrying. After Harry’s bath, I often do yoga with him at homenow, and the heat of my hands and the slow, rhythmic nature ofthe movements send him to sleep with much greater ease than asimple cuddle and a song tape ever could. He started sleepingthrough the night months before a lot of other babies that weknow, and I’m in no doubt that that has sonething to do with ouryoga.
Being an enthusiast now, I’ve read up on the later benefits ofwhat baby yoga can do and I’m excited. It’s clear from the facthe rolled early that Harry has good spatial awareness, andplenty of confidence in what his body is capable of. When wetook him for his eight-month check my health visitor told me hewill miss out crawling stage – his spine is strong, and havingbeen made aware of the limitations of his body through yoga, hedoesn’t need to go through the exploration that crawling allows.
As well as the very evident physical benefits of baby yoga, it’salso been a lifesaver for me. On maternity leave I was a bit ofa lonely mum, and now I have something of a network. Size tenagain and happy, there is never a morning goes by when Harry andI do not have a play date. It’s turned things around. I thinkill go down the gym tomorrow…

Yoga For Kids: Building Self-image (part 1)

Parents are struggling to find methods for instilling self-confidence within their children. As adults, we know that the repercussions of poor self image can result in anxiety, depression, and a huge list of bad scenarios.
With this in mind, there are a number of positive actions that parents, teachers, physicians, and Yoga teachers can take to build solid foundations, within a given child’s character. By seeking solutions, we can give our children a positive view of life. In turn, children will develop into successful adults by building strong relationships and by exceptional performance, within his or her career.
Let’s look at the positive aspects for children within a typical Kids Yoga class. Although, Yoga is a vast subject, and there are a number of topics to discuss; children are better off being taught to focus on four components within a Hatha Yoga class.
These four components are posture, breathing, relaxing, and meditation. A child will find all four of these subjects easy to grasp, but all of them are a challenge. For many kids, the relaxation and meditation are easy to understand, but mastering them is another matter.
Now, let’s look at how a Yoga class for a child can have a profound and positive impact on his or her self-image. One of the first lessons a child walks away with is self-acceptance. Every child learns to appreciate being the best he or she can possibly be. This is achieved by understanding that other children may excel in one area of Yoga, while other children may be exceptional in a completely different area.
For example: One child may be able to relax or meditate; another child may demonstrate balancing skills in Eagle Pose; while another child is exceptionally strong in the Warrior Series. In this case, it is up to the Yoga teacher to give out praise equally to all the children present in a class.
How can you accomplish this? As teachers, we always praise the exceptional, but since this is a Yoga class you can afford to praise every child who tries his or her best. It is natural for children and adults to seek praise. This is why the world has so much competition for every little event.
However, competition should be “brushed aside” in a Kids Yoga class. The Yoga studio, or ashram, should be a nurturing place for children and adults to master life skills. Yoga literally means “unity,” and competition bolsters the ego. Therefore, this is not the way Yoga was designed for children or adults.

The Truth About Options For Yoga Teachers (part 4)

Yoga Hybrids: It could be argued that Pilates is a Yoga hybrid. I don’t want to start a big debate over the Pilates Method. The founder, Joseph Pilates, was truly an innovator and way ahead of his time; he also practiced Yoga and martial arts. Therefore, the roots of the Pilates Method are still clear to see.
Many of the Yoga hybrids are combinations of Yoga with dance, martial arts, and Pilates. If you were to pursue these a bit further you could “re-invent the wheel” or become certified to teach Kripalu DansKinetics, The Method, Yoga Fusion, Yogilates, or Nia.
All of these Yoga hybrids are very active and trendy at this time. Some of them may well pass the test of time, such as the Pilates Method. Only time will tell if a health maintenance system will span generations. If you are looking for an extra niche to add to your Yoga teaching skills, any one of these methods will compliment a Yoga class schedule.
Chair Yoga: There are some Yoga teachers who should not consider this field. If a Yoga instructor does not believe in modifications, props, and tailoring a Yoga class toward the students, he or she should stay away from this rewarding field.
There is a tremendously large demand for Yoga teachers, who are patient, compassionate, creative, and want to help others. This is a Yoga teaching position which demands that you learn about ailments, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and physiology, on a steady basis. Continuing education is a very important part of a Chair Yoga teacher’s job.
As the Baby Boom generation ages, this “spells out” job security for Yoga instructors who wish to specialize in Chair Yoga. There is no better time than right now to get started, and Chair Yoga will continue to be in need for decades to come. Unfortunately, I do not have enough time for the demand for all of the Chair Yoga classes in my little corner of Rhode Island.
In the past, I have trained Yoga teachers to specialize in this field. The demand to fill the local needs of nursing homes, senior centers, gated communities, assisted living, adult day care, and physical rehabilitation centers, is far greater than the number of teachers. This is just the “tip of the iceberg,” and my mornings are full with teaching Chair Yoga sessions in the Greater Providence area.
Lastly, the current Chair Yoga teaching opportunities are many, and this particular field is still in its infancy. You will never find a more appreciative group of students, than you will find by teaching a Chair Yoga class.

The 4 Paths Of Yoga

Here is written a brief explanation of each of the 4 paths of yoga. All the paths lead ultimately to the same destination - to union with Brahman or God (yoga) - and the lessons in each path need to be integrated if true wisdom is to be attained.
Yoga will develop man as a whole - his heart, intelligence and hand. All these 4 paths can be combined into a single spiritual process (ensuring balance is always present), because the ultimate objective of all of them is the same.
Raja yoga - (Royal yoga) - The yoga of physical and mental control - Meditation is the focal point of this branch of yoga. It focuses on controlling the mind in order to attain enlightenment. Hatha yoga is the physical branch of Raja yoga - which teaches control of the body. The word hatha means willful or forceful. Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical exercises (known as asana's or postures), designed to align your skin, muscles, and bones. The postures are also designed so that energy can flow freely. Hatha is also translated as ha meaning "sun" and tha meaning "moon." Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We also learn to balance our effort and surrender in each pose.
Compiled by the Sage - Patanjali - in the yoga Sutras, the following 8 Limbs of Raja yoga are a progressive series of steps which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading the yogi to enlightenment.
*Yamas - or restraints (Don'ts) are divided into five moral injuctions, aimed at destroying the lower nature. They are - Ahimsa or non-violence , Satyam or truthfulness , Brahmacharya or moderation in all things (control of all senses), Asteya or non-stealing , Aparigraha or non-covetousness.
*Niyamas - or observances (Do's) are also divided into five and complete the ethical precepts. They are - Saucha or purity - this internal and external cleanliness, Santosha or contentment , Tapas or austerity , Swadhyaya or study of the sacred texts , Ishwara Pranidhana which is constantly living with an awareness of the divine Presence.
*Asanas - Physical yoga Postures.
*Pranayama - control of the breath.
(Asanas & Pranayama form the part of Raja yoga known as Hatha yoga)
*Pratyahara - withdrawal of the senses in order to still the mind.
*Dharana - concentration. When Dharana is achieved, it leads to the next step:
*Dhyana - meditation . When mastered Dhyana leads to the last step:
*Samadhi - the superconscious state. In Samadhi - oneness is experienced. This is the deepest and highest state of consciousness where body and mind have been transcended.
Karma yoga - (action) - is the path of service, and none of us can escape this pathway. The principle of Karma yoga is that what we experience today is created by our actions in the past. So if what goes around comes around - we will be inclined to live a less selfish life. It teaches us to detach ourselves from the results of our actions, lets us let go of the ego, and purify the heart.
Bhakti yoga - (devotion) - the path of worship. Seeing the divine in all of creation - it provides us with an opportunity to cultivate acceptance and tolerance for everyone we come into contact with. It is the yoga of the heart. This is the most popular path in India, and it involves surrendering yourself to the devine through prayer, worship and ritual.
Jnana yoga - (wisdom) - the yoga of the mind, the path of inner enquiry. This path requires development of the intellect through the study of the scriptures and texts of the Yogic tradition. It involves serious study and will appeal to those who are more intellectually inclined.

The practice of yoga brings with it many physical and emotional benefits that the majority of people are unaware of. This article is quite long, so we have broken it up into two parts. The first part is an introduction to yoga and a overview of the major physical and psychological benefits of yoga, while the second part shows how practicing yoga daily can have a profound effect on your ability to create a healthy lifestyle for yourself.
yoga is a science; and indeed, in many places in the world (such as India), it is referred to as a science. This is not merely playing with words; it truly is approached as a science, which means that it is understood in terms of scientific methods.
Yogic science seeks to verify cause and effect, and build principles based upon objective observations. Indeed, in many places in the world, to be a yogic master of any credibility, one must be highly educated in the sciences, including physics and the biological sciences.
This discussion on yoga as science is important for us to include because it allows us to sensibly ask the question: what are the benefits of yoga? After all, if yoga is a faith or a belief, then asking this question isn't fair; because it's one that yoga cannot answer in terms that we can objectively understand.
yoga is a science; as empirical and pragmatic as kinesiology, or exercise science, which seeks to understand how the body acts and reacts to changes in the internal physical environment. And even more simply than any of this: each of us has a right to ask the basic question, "why should I bother practicing yoga and what experience or benefits can I expect?"
Indeed, while the experience of yoga cannot be reduced to words – just as reading a book on preparing for a marathon isn't going to actually physically prepare you to run a marathon – the goals and principles of yoga can easily be discussed.

yoga involves a series of postures, during which you pay special attention to your breathing — exhaling during certain movements and inhaling with others. You can approach yoga as a way to promote physical flexibility, strength and endurance or as a way to enhance your spirituality.
The Mind-Body Connection
yoga is centered on the mind-body connection. This mind-body harmony is achieved through three things:
- postures (asanas)
- proper breathing (pranayama)
- meditation
Mind and body draw inspiration and guidance from the combined practices of asanas, breathing, and meditation. As people age (to yogis, ageing is an artificial condition), our bodies become susceptible to toxins and poisons (caused by environmental and poor dietary factors).

How To Teach Anger Management To Your Child

Most of us recognize the continuing escalation of violencearound us, due to intolerance, and many of us blame it onsomebody else. Parents teach their children, all the time, andwhen one of us displays "road rage," while our child is in thecar, we teach a brand new skill set.
Although, road rage is inappropriate behavior, at any time, andcan get you killed, most children who are exposed to it, willduplicate the actions of their parents, when they are old enoughto drive.
So the first step, is to set an example and, possibly, use someof these ideas, for yourself. Studies show that anger causesatherosclerosis, the build-up of plaques in the arteries, thatis a major factor in developing high blood pressure, heartdisease, heart attack, and premature death.
Also, during a "temper tantrum," adrenaline and blood pressurelevels rise beyond normal. This behavior is more dangerous toparent's bodies due to the normal "wear and tear" alreadyexisting.
Now, you may be convinced that anger can kill you, but let'slook at one more factor. You could hurt someone else, findyourself in prison, or get yourself killed due to incitingviolence against others. There are other people, who are havingdifficulty dealing with anger management too.
Back to our children: All children need exercise and they arenaturally full of energy. Look at any other species, and youwill see the same behavior. Should we drug our dogs, cats, andparrots, when they display youthful exuberance?
Children have to run, jump, and shout. So let them play in theback yard, in a park, and get them involved in sports, yoga,dance, or martial arts. You will never regret letting your childenjoy life, constructively learn in the process, and just be akid.
For all of us, there is a time to be quiet and a time to shout.Children need years to learn this, so let's keep them active inthe process. Keep them away from the television, Internet, andvideo games, except for "rainy days." Coloring books, boardgames, and reading are also good activities for rainy days.
A heavy bag is a great tool for letting anger out. You and yourchild can use it together. You can learn to punch and kick it,for the aerobic benefits, as well. If you have a friend who is aboxer or martial artist, you could get some pointers. After justa 20-minute session, I guarantee you, and your child, will havedealt with anger - there will be little, if any, left.
Teach your child forgiveness, through your own example. I am notasking you to let people "walk all over you." However, letgrudges go; life is really too short to keep a feud going.
You can also control your child's "circle of friends," just bygetting him or her involved in, group activities such as: Leaguesports, dance, yoga, or martial arts. The parents who have theirchildren in these activities want the best for them and arewilling to sacrifice their time, or money, to get it.
This will keep your child busy, happy, and active, with apre-selected crowd of friends, who have parents that care. Thisis a "win - win" situation and well worth the investment.
This is not to say that every child you run into, at thesefunctions, will be perfect, but in the above mentionedactivities, all of them are structured, adult-supervised, andrules for behavior are in place. This form of organizationbecomes a habit, your child will follow these guidelines, andbring them home.
Here is another idea that will help. Have your child take careof a pet or a plant, every day. Children love to care foranimals or plants, but they still need supervision. The resultof this will be, your child learns compassion.
Compassion will keep anger "in check" every time.

Secrets of Successful Yoga Studios
What will happen if you are a competent, talented, and compassionate yoga teacher, without enough dedicated students? Here is a simple answer: Don’t quit your “day job” and don’t open a yoga studio of your own. Sorry to be so blunt, but you need time to grow your following.
When, or if, you develop a following as an independent contractor, then and only then, think about opening a yoga center. This is not meant to be harsh, but there are enough yoga centers with poor business skills to go around, and you don’t need to lose every penny you saved without developing sound business plans.
Therefore, please take time to develop a yoga business plan with goals and estimated time frames. Unfortunately, I have seen too many yoga studios open with a “one month plan.” Can you imagine opening an ashram without a telephone, getting caught up in zoning board complications, or just hoping for the best? One poorly organized yoga studio makes all yoga teachers look bad, and leaves the public thinking every yoga studio is like that.
How do you feel when you go to a deli for the 20th time and the counter help tries to avoid you? Do you feel like going back again, when, half the time, they get your order wrong? Where am I going with this?
Every yoga studio should have an appointed person for customer service and public relations. yoga teachers should know all of their students’ names “by heart.” If you ignore your yoga students, there is no reason for them to stay. They will feel unwelcome and unworthy. One of the worst ways to handle a student / teacher relationship is to ignore a yoga student.
Be careful of perceptions that make you feel like you are better than your yoga students. Remember that your students pay you to teach yoga. You should treat them like your best friends. How many of your friends are paying for your meals, car, mortgage, or your vacations? Your yoga students are “number one.”
Doing the “little extras,” keeps yoga students. When a student has a question, it is your job to give an informed answer; and if you do not have one, consult with a senior or master yoga teacher. If you are not a “people person,” do not become a yoga teacher.
Make sure that the person who answers your phone loves people. You can’t keep a yoga studio open with a grumpy receptionist. The receptionist is the initial “gate keeper” of a yoga studio, and for yoga students, that gate should be held open with a wide smile.
Each yoga studio should be a haven for students to find what they seek, without putting up with inferior service. They face far too much of it, outside the yoga class. You should know the needs of your students and promise only what you can deliver.

Yoga, The Hot New Trend?
Yoga, as most of us know, is the ancient practice of breathing, meditation and a performing of certain postures. Practicing yoga has gained popularity in recent years and is now starting to gain a lot of attention from the material world. This has its serious practitioners concerned that the reason behind it's use will be lost in the grab for cash. Many people that practice yoga, or are attempting to learn it, are people that are well educated and are usually found to be doing above average financially. They are also the types of people willing to spend more money on things that are perceived to be better for the environment. Yoga is now becoming an 'in' thing to do. Because of this a good many people are jumping on the bandwagon and have started to sell all of the 'extras' that are used to enjoy yoga. Entrepreneurs are pursuing this market with a vengeance. These include: books, videos, music, clothes and even the toe socks are making a comeback. A lot of entrepreneurs are happy that they are able to adhere to yoga's natural healing principles while also turning a great profit. And a lot of investors are now being attracted to this trend as a means to make some serious cash.
Americans alone spend over $2.95 billion a year on yoga classes, clothing, videos, equipment, yoga holidays and more. Aging baby boomers have found it to be a less aggressive way to stay fit.
A study found that approximately 16.5 million people are now practicing yoga in the United States in gyms, in studios, or at home, this is up a whopping 43 percent from a study done in 2002.
In Vancouver, British Columbia, the company Lululemon Athletica has found there to be a rise in sales of yoga apparel to $100 million since they opened in 1998. People are snapping up the trendy pants and tops to wear to yoga class and they are becoming more and more popular for wearing to the grocery store or even to wear out to dinner.
Spas are finding that combining yoga classes with massage, facials and alternative treatments such as acupuncture, are a way to utilize a whole mind and body renewal process.
While spas are enjoying the money to be made by using yoga as a part of their product package, many consumers are now coming to enjoy it's many benefits and to realize that there are less stressful ways to stay fit and healthy.
Even some schools are now starting to teach yoga. They are realizing that it is the essence of what's missing in the lives of many modern teens: a connection between their mind and body. An ancient art that has been used for centuries to learn and enjoy a peaceful time, while reducing stress and to cultivate an enthusiasm for exercise. This could not have been rediscovered at a better time. After all, it is not news to anyone that has seen the stories on television that kids and teens are fatter and less active than ever these days.
According to a study done in 2002 by the National Center for Health Statistics it was found that 16% of young people ages 6-19 are overweight. The figures are probably much higher today and we all know just by walking around town that more and more adults are overweight too.
In a time when everything is rush rush and we are all eating more fast food than ever, while leading more and more stressful lives; maybe we all just need to take a little time to relax. Enjoy some yoga and de-stress.
