Teaching Hatha Yoga - Yogic Methods for Happiness

5.31.2008

By Paul Jerard

Students come to Yoga classes for a variety of reasons, but one of the reasons is because the steady practice makes them happy. Those that think Hatha Yoga is a physically demanding form of torture will not continue the practice.

For teachers, the objective is to show students the multiple benefits of Yoga over the course of a month. Why a month? These days, most people are only willing to give 30 days to try something new, and Yoga is no different. Let's look at ways to make new students aware of the benefits of a continued Yoga practice.

What is the primary form of instant gratification? If you are thinking of chocolate, that's close. The primary form of instant gratification is happiness. In fact, you do not have to pay to smile or laugh. Some people pay for entertainment, but this is not a requirement for laughing or smiling.

Yoga teachers want their students to appreciate life "in the now," but an easy place to start is by teaching them to develop full awareness of their surroundings. For example: The smell of flowers, the feeling of sunshine, and the sound of a bird's song, are small features on this journey we call "life," and they can each bring about states of happiness.

Your classroom does not have to become a comedy club or circus, but you can create a joyful atmosphere. Just by getting students to appreciate the simple pleasures in life, they will begin to open their minds to new paths of happiness.

Look at how much you appreciate the benefits of Pranayama - it required your awareness to appreciate it, and developed happiness, before you continued the practice on your own.

Yoga Certification Success

By Paul Jerard

After successful graduation from a Yoga teacher training program, you may want to take the shortest track to success. Sometimes, this topic is not discussed during a teacher intensive, but most interns desire professional success.

Which techniques should a Yoga teacher master for personal growth and to help others achieve success in their lives? Let's take a look at factors which are very important to the professional growth of Yoga instructors.

Optimum communication is a primary skill for all Yoga teachers to possess. When we think about teaching Yoga in a class, we consider effective communication skills to be a must. We must be able to explain Yogic concepts, and ideas, in more than one way.

Developing the right tone, cueing skills, proper voice inflection, knowing when to assist, and demonstrating skills, all come into play. Yet, to teach anything, we must also be good listeners. Communication is a two way street, and it requires empathic listening skills.

Writing and telephone skills are also part of the skill set required to teach. Telephone communication, or a response to an Email, will often be your first contact with a new student. Addressing the needs of the public requires effective communication skills and compassion for people.

Although we teach self-worth and stress management skills to our students, we have to invest time in our regular personal Yoga practice to lead by example. If we invest most of our time in networking, marketing, advertising, and the business of Yoga, there is not much time left for our personal practice.

Therefore, appoint a regularly-scheduled Yoga practice time to work by yourself or with another teacher - to do otherwise, will affect your own health. This is an irony, which also happens to medical professionals: When one has a huge workload, one has little time left for personal health.

Life is full of challenges, but we should do our best to maintain a positive attitude, even in the worst of times. Some people will state that all obstacles and challenges are an illusion, but it is not easy to convince someone who is up to their ears in them.

To focus on negative thoughts, for too long, can create a reality that nobody wants. When any of us are confronted with obstacles, and challenges, it is always best to look for a solution within our Yoga practice. This prevents us from dwelling on negative thoughts. At the same time, there is gratification in developing problem-solving skills.

Yoga Positions For Beginners - Tadasana "Mountain Position"

By Kurt Tasche

Many people look at yoga and think it is a difficult thing to master. They envision Indian yogis twisting and contorting their bodies into almost pretzel like shapes. However, those who are able to perform these incredible feats of flexibility have been practicing yoga for many years. There are actually many yoga positions for beginners that are both beneficial to health and wellness, yet easy to perform.

First in our list of yoga positions for beginners is "tadasana" or "mountain position".

To perform tadasana, stand erect with your feet together. Let the heels and the big toes touch each other. Keep the arms straight and well stretched, by the side, with the palms touching the thighs. Look straight. Raise your arms straight to the level of your shoulders, with the palms facing the floor and the fingers pointing forward. Twist your wrists, with the palms turned outwards. Interlock your fingers. Stretch your hands and further lift the arms towards the sky till they are in line with your legs. Raise your heels as much as you can. Stand on your toes, squeeze the thighs and lift the whole body upwards as much as you can. Feel the stretch. Breathe easily. Keep this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Then slowly come back to the original position.

Practicing this yoga position for beginners improves posture, increases height (as the spine becomes stronger and able to stay erect), makes the spine flexible and improves stability and balance. This asana is also great therapy to help cure back pain. If you are prone to restlessness, you may find it difficult to practice this asana, as you will need to remain in perfect posture, and on your toes, for up to one minute.

I will continue discussing other yoga positions for beginners in future articles.

Teaching Hatha Yoga - Methods for Happiness

By Paul Jerard

Let's take a systematic approach toward happiness, by using Yoga principles, and applying them to life. Here are a few more methods to help anyone find happiness at any time.

Just by visiting a local Yoga class, you will find yourself surrounded by positive energy. Yet, this same principle applies to going anywhere like-minded people exist. Always surround yourself with optimists.

Look within, and you will find good qualities. Be aware of your strong points and stop worrying about your short comings. We are all human, so do not be the last one to forgive yourself for a mistake. One of the worst mistakes you can make is not forgiving yourself.

Stay away from sinking into a self-pity slump. The future is often what we anticipate. With that said, there is a real need to anticipate success. You have nothing to lose by maintaining a positive outlook on life.

Learn to laugh often, and learn to laugh at yourself - it is good for your health. This is why Laughter Yoga has become so popular. When you start to take life too seriously, observe it and smile.

Life is too short to worry all the time. In fact, worrying is a complete waste of time. Finding solutions is not worrying. If you focus on solutions, you may just solve those worries away.

Believe that you deserve success and happiness. To think otherwise, invites disaster. If we think we deserve failure, we begin to attract pessimists. The last thing any of us needs is to find ourselves in the company of critics.

Be thankful for your health, family, friends, home, and your good qualities. Focus on the good things in life, which you already have. Yoga practice starts when you roll up the mat and learn to put the methods into practice.

How To Start A Yoga Business

By Lara Greene

Starting a business venture can be fun and enjoyable if done properly. This also applies in the case of commencing a project in yoga. We, therefore, bring together all you will ever need to know on How to Start a Yoga Business.

The first requirement for starting a successful business is a valid yoga certification. It would be ideal if you could get a certificate from a well-reputed yoga institute or a good yoga teacher. Various online courses are also available these days, but it is always advisable to avoid such lures.

Yoga is a very comprehensive technique and requires a lot of practice just to get a hang of what you are doing. A good instructor, who is true to his subject, will always insist on taking hands-on instruction rather than an online course. In fact, it is so believed that yoga cannot be learned even by reading books, let alone websites.

Therefore, learn from a good instructor and after you have mastered the technique enough, start assisting your instructor in his/her courses. This will develop the additional faculties in you for handling a group of inquisitive students.

Once this is done, you can start thinking about starting your own business. The first step here would be to find out what kind of an investment you can spare for this new venture of yours. We can call this the Seed Capital. The amount of the seed capital that you are willing to invest in your business will solve your next question of where, and for whom to start your business.

If you want to target the upmarket consumers, then your studio should be adequately designed. It should have the necessary equipments and the required facilities. Hence, the money required would also be on the higher side.

On the other hand, if your seed capital is low then you can start your studio at your own residence, or maybe at some other cheap location. A cheaper locality will invite lower income group consumers. You may not require a lot of additional equipments and facilities in this case.

Once this is done, you can start insuring you and your business against unforeseen legal complications. Legal complications increase if you take your studio premises on lease. Adequate insurance coverage is always a good idea in any case.

After all this, you can devise inexpensive ways to market your services and start your work. Pricing of your services is another factor that must be considered very carefully. A little market check as to your competitors will help you decide a competitive price for your classes.

This is a brief and the most practical answer on How to Start a Yoga Business. Hope you will follow it to its minutest detail and be successful in your endeavor.

Tips for Yoga Websites

By Mikel A Bruce

Almost 75% of all households in the United States have internet access and it is rising at a steady rate. Until recently a Yoga business could get exposure to potential students by simply advertising in the phone book, but with the growth of the Internet, the majority of business-searches are conducted via the web. What does this mean for your Yoga business? Unquestionably, if you don't have a Web presence, you are not tapping into one of the most consistent and cost-effective source of business leads.

With a website, the first impression is critical. A visitor can come and go very quickly, especially when conducting a search and checking out several websites. To make a good first impression, keep your visitor on your website, and motivate them to contact you, follow these tips:

1. Keep the content simple: remember, in most cases a website is not designed to sell your service. It is designed to give your potential students enough information about you and your business to entice them to contact you. Too much text per page will deter them from reading it at all.

2. Simple navigation bar: make sure that your website has an easy-to-find and simple-to-use navigation or menu bar. The navigation bar is the set of links or tabs used to get from one web page to another.

3. Contact Information: include all your contact information on each page of your site and have an easy-to-find link to your contact page.

4. Pictures: include at least one picture per page with the text to enhance its visual appeal.

5. Sound: be careful not to frustrate your website visitor with sound or music. If you do use sound, keep it subtle and brief.

6. Add an easy to find link to your schedule

7. Consider offering an online scheduling feature making it easy and convenient for them to pay and sign up for classes.

8. Place a prominent link on your own page for them to sign up for your newsletter and considering offering some type of incentive for them to sign up such as a free e-book on any topic relevant to your potential students. An example might be 'Free e-book on 10 Tips to Reduce Stress in the Office using Yoga'

9. Send out a monthly e-newsletter with educational information, discounts, promotions, etc...

10. Exchange links with non-competitive businesses in order to drive more traffic to your website.

Beginning Yoga For Its Many Health Benefits

By Robert Kokoska

Originally, the meditation techniques of yoga were developed primarily as a spiritual practice amongst the polytheist religion of Hinduism, in the Indian sub-continent, around 6000 years ago. In India, or to devout Hindus, success in yoga would ultimately mean that they have escaped the birth and rebirth cycle and become an immortal soul. Today, especially in 'western' countries, the practice of yoga is associated with the benefits that can be derived from standard meditation and its exercises, as much as it's other spiritual values. Having said that, yoga does exert a spiritual influence on those who choose to try it and go on to develop their interest in practicing yoga.

There are many different styles and techniques of yoga that you could start with. Quite often for a beginner the style they start with is dependent on the version being taught in local classes for yoga. By the way, if you didn't already know it, a teacher of yoga is called a guru - which generally means teacher - and anyone practicing yoga is known as a yogi. Despite there being many forms of yoga they all seek to enable the yogi to be able to control their mind. Whilst it takes much practice and many years to arrive at this point people do start taking yoga classes because they wish to be able to relax their minds and overcome stress.

Many people nowadays are attracted to yoga because of the stresses and strains of modern living and that at times, in order to carry on coping, we need to find time to mentally relax. Yoga refers the technique of being able to eliminate mental tension at will by being able to "slip a second"; training your unconscious to slip in and out of the reality we live in. This re-energizes the mind so we can once again face and cope with our reality, without feeling mentally fatigued. Of course, there's no easy route to being able to do this.

The practice of meditative yoga includes; adopting a healthy diet that doesn't put stress on your body, performing exercises to enable your body to relax, learning to take better control of your breathing and purifying your body so that your mind can then relax. In your yoga class you will at least learn to let go of your cares and connect with your higher self, which is widely known as a highly liberating experience for anyone feeling stressed out, depressed or even just a bit down in the dumps.

Meanwhile, until you can begin your yoga classes you might want try a simple technique on your own. Find somewhere that's quiet and calm and just sit down comfortably without strain and close your eyes. Take three deep breaths, and then return your breathing to its normal rate. Next you simply try to clear your mind of all thoughts and sounds. How long that moment lasts is not important and in the beginning you will find it hard to maintain mental silence, but try doing this easy meditation technique daily to help clear your mind and unwind from a stressful day.

Yoga Poses For Stretching - Broad Classification And Benefits

By Lucas Rockwood

Yoga poses or Asanas make yoga a unique way of attaining physical, psychological and spiritual health. The secret of increasing awareness and popularity of yoga internationally lies to a greater extent in various yoga poses. The objective behind performing yoga is attaining both strength and flexibility. And this unique combination hardly found in any other work out is an outcome of yoga positions. These positions are several combinations of stretching and breathing. Yoga poses are classified into several types depending on the posture and the resulting benefits. Some of them are for a certain part of the body and benefit that particular part while some are performed using whole body and offer benefits to the whole body. These poses are broadly categorised as standing poses, seated poses, back bends, forward bends, balance, twists, supine and prone poses, inversion and relaxation poses.

Standing positions

Mountain pose (Parvatasan) is considered to be the most basic standing pose and can be used to form several other asanas. These poses are mainly intended to benefit legs and hips and they help attain improved posture. Remarkable benefits of standing positions are strong leg muscles, increased mobility in neck and shoulder and improved flexibility in pelvis and lower back.

Seated positions

Lotus Pose (Padmasana) is a basic seated pose and is used in several other asanas. There are mainly two types of seated poses, one with legs crossed and other with legs folded back. These poses are intended for strengthening back, lower back and hips. These poses offer agility to spine and flexibility to hips, knees, ankles and groins. Combinations of deep breating, normal breathing, fast breathing and breath control with the basic seated position are used for attaining benefits like mental peace and curing breathing related ailments.

Back bends

As the name suggests, the positions aim at strengthening chest, rib, cage, arms and shoulders. The poses result into relaxing the front body, hips, arms and shoulders and improving the stability of the spine. Proper back bends help cure old backache and shoulder pain.

Forward bends

The positions are beneficial for strengthening lower back, back, spine, shoulders and neck. The positions are ideal for escaping from old neck stiffness and spinal pain. These positions are helpful in attaining a feeling of relaxation and calmness.

Balance

Balance or Santulan poses are intended for improving body posture, muscle toning, concentration and co-ordination. It aims at strengthening the spine and obtaining control on it to stop you from falling an increasing your stamina. However, these type are poses should be performed only by advice of and in presence of yoga experts.

Twists

Even though the name sounds strange, these poses performed properly with expert guidance help to release body tension and stiffness. Performed to the both sides of the body, twists result into increased shoulder and hip mobility, spine flexibility and escape from backache.

Supine and prone poses

There are several asanas in supine and prone poses. Supine poses are performed on one's back and ideally offer improved spinal mobility and strong abdominal and hip muscles. In some combinations of these poses the body is either totally kept flat on the floor or is lifted up from the floor totally or partially with the support of hands or legs or both.

Prone poses are performed facing the floor. These poses help strengthen arms, shoulders, spine and legs. They also help relaxing back and lower back and are used as a solution for backache. In some of the combinations in these poses, upper half or lower half or both the parts are stretched and lifted a little up supporting them by abdomen.

Inversion

As the name suggests, these poses are performed keeping legs at higher position than heart. This leads improved blood circulation in the upper body. One of the most famous asanas in this pose is Sheershasana, which is keeping your body upside down for few seconds.

Relaxation

These poses are simple relaxing positions, which calm the body and mind after performing other poses. They help to cool the body down and attain mental peace.

There are several poses in each of the above sections. From its origin in ancient times, there have been several additions, modifications in yoga poses and their combinations. Yoga poses can effectively be used as therapy for curing some of the old ailments and pains which otherwise do not respond to modern medicines.

Yoga Styles

By Diane Blakemore

Yoga is an awesome way to take care of yourself. Anyone can benefit from the practice, but it is not one-size-fits-all. There are many styles, classes and teachers. The key is finding the one that fits you!

I have been teaching yoga for several years, and practicing for many years before. As a new student, it all seemed very confusing. Choosing a class is challenging if you don't know the language. Many studios advertise teaching "hatha" yoga. Nearly all classes taught in the USA are hatha yoga. Hatha is simply the yoga of movement and postures. But within hatha yoga there are many styles. Some of the more common styles taught include:

Kundalini: An ancient practice, Kundalini builds energy in the body through chanting, meditation and kriyas (a predetermined set of movements for a given outcome). Kundalini is a very spiritual yoga.

Iyengar: A strict discipline, Iyengar focuses on alignment. Practitioners use props (blocks, straps, etc.) to assist in achieving the best form.

Ashtanga: The original "power yoga", Ashtanga moves at a steady pace. Each movement is timed to the breath.

Anusara: The "feel good" yoga, Anusara allows freedom to be an individual. The postures are thought to conform to the body, not the body conforming to the posture.

Bikram: Also known as "hot yoga", Bikram is practiced in rooms heated to 105F. 26 postures are repeated in the same order for every class.

Knowing the differences in the styles can assist you in choosing a class. But in all truth, most teachers have been exposed to more than one style. Combining the various styles along with their own personality, each teacher will create a unique experience. So, the best way to find your fit is to get out there and try one. If the class isn't you, try another. With so many choices, you are sure to find a style, class, and teacher to fit you!

Stressed? - Simple Breathing Meditation to Calm Your Mind and Boost Your Energy

By Ntathu Allen

Are you busy? Tired from running from one activity, social engagement to another? Are you looking for an easy way to relax and unwind after a busy day at work or caring for your children at home?

The following simple Breathing Relaxation Practice, takes about five minutes and leaves you feeling energised, calm and revitalised.

To begin, find a quiet space to sit down.

* Uncross your legs and place both feet flat on the floor, hip width apart. If your feet do not touch the floor, just move forward until they do or place a firm book under your feet.

* Rest your hands, lightly on your thigh with the palms facing up.

* Relax your shoulders. Sit up straight and lengthen your spine. Make sure you are sitting evenly on both buttocks.

* Gently tuck your chin in towards your chest, keeping it level with the floor. This allows the neck to be in alignment with the rest of your spine.

* Become aware of your spine. Feel as if you are sitting up tall and straight.

* Smile. Allow your jaw to relax, tongue resting behind the lower front teeth.

* Your eyes may be either opened or closed. If opened, gently lower your gaze, keep them unfocused, and rest your gaze on a spot in front of you.

* If your eyes are closed, focus your awareness on a spot within, e.g., below the navel, the point between your eyebrows or your heart centre..

* Begin to observe the body. Tense and relax the toes, then the feet, calves, knees, thighs, buttocks, hands, shoulders. Allow all muscles to relax

* Now start to become aware of your breath. Don't try to control the breath, just be aware of how you are breathing. Observe the rhythm of the breathe.

* Breathe in slowly through the nose and as you exhale, through your nose, slowly release the breath.

* Let the breath, be steady,, full and deep. Observe the movement of the abdomen as you slowly inhale and exhale. Slowly let the breath flow through the body, releasing tension and fatigue as you breathe out and breathing in peace, joy and love as you breathe in.

* Inhale and exhale, slowly for five to seven rounds of deep steady breathing. try and extend each breath you take.

Can I Lose Weight With Yoga?

By Angela Blake

Yoga has many benefits. A regular program of yoga can help keep your spine supple, your core strong, and help you maintain balance and poise. It also tones your muscles, helps strengthen your immune system, and boosts your metabolism. However, yoga alone cannot help you lose large amounts of weight. It is, however, a good idea to add it to any healthy living plan.

Yoga will help you feel better about yourself and is a great confidence booster. Many find yoga is an island of calm in an otherwise hectic world. While not all yoga is aerobic, there are some types of yoga that can substitute for aerobic activity. Using yoga to lose weight all depends on the type you do and how frequently you do it. You should opt to engage in 90 minutes of aerobic style yoga three or more times per week, and if you add in another style of yoga the remaining days per week you can gain all the benefits of most other types of physical activity such as weight or strength training and flexibility.

In order to lose weight and keep it off you need to effect lasting changes in your lifestyle permanently. Doing this requires incorporating 5 key elements into your lifestyle. These are adequate rest, drinking enough water, eating a balanced diet, proper types of exercise, and caring for yourself emotionally. Yoga can help with the exercise and emotional elements. So what is yoga?

Hatha Yoga: Exercise for the Mind & Spirit

Yoga is based on eight principles as a study of all religions. It is not of itself a religion. One of the eight studies deals with physical training and keeping the body in good working order. When people in the west think about yoga, it is the branch of Hatha Yoga they have in mind. Hatha Yoga itself has many branches or types of physical training systems developed over many years that are all based on the same physical postures or poses. Here are just a few:

Hatha: while this is the yoga branch that deals with physical yoga, here in the west a class that is called Hatha generally means it will be slow and gentle and thus provide a good introduction for beginners to learn the yoga poses.

Vinyasa: this may also be called sun salutations or breath-synchronized movement. It is just slightly more vigorous than Hatha. Some places use this as a warm up before other more vigorous types of yoga begin.

Ashtanga & Power Yoga: Ashtanga means eight limbs and is based on the whole philosophy of yoga. It is a very fast paced type of yoga that is always performed in the same order. It flows and moved without pauses. Power yoga is usually based on Ashtanga, but not always, though it usually is the inspiration for power yoga.

Iyengar: this is based on the teachings of Yogi B.K.S. Iyengar which is based on an emphasis of body alignment. Precise alignment is effective to maximize benefits and avoid injury. In this type of exercise you usually hold each pose over long periods of time rather than moving quickly form one to the next. You usually will use props such as blankets, blocks, and straps.

Kundalini: this emphasizes breath in conjunction with movement. Combining movement with controlled breath is meant to move and free energy within the chakras or body systems. This type of yoga can be very helpful to encourage regulation with the digestion and adrenal systems.

Bikram or Hot Yoga: be prepared to spend time in a hot room that is usually around 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of yoga is useful for detoxing though profuse sweating and loosening tight muscles. The original Bikram was based on 26 poses. But not all classes follow this.

Anusara: this relatively new style of yoga founded in 1977 by a man named John Friend combines physical alignment with positive energy derived from tantra. The philosophy here is the goodness of all beings. Props are also often used in this class which is generally open to people of all levels of fitness and abilities.

Jivanukti: David life and Sharon Gannon founded this style in New York at one of the most elite Yoga Studios. It is inspired by Ashtanga and strongly emphasizes chanting, meditation, and spirituality. Most teachers of yoga in the United States have been trained by them.

Forrest: Originated by Anna Forrest in California and is based on vigorous Asana poses. It is designed to strengthen, purify, release, and heal the body and promote healing form within both physically and emotionally. You can expect intense aerobic exercise that helps develop your core and expand your breathing ability.

Integral: based on the teachings of Yogi Sri Swami Sachinananda who came to the US in the 1960's. He founded many Institutes that use gentle Hatha practice along with chanting and mediation. You can find books also based on this such as Richard Hittlemans 28 day exercise plan which help newbie's and beginners to receive maximum benefits and results through daily practice in their first month.

Yoga is generally based on 5 general principles Proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking. By incorporating aerobic Yoga or other aerobic exercise for 90 minutes per session 3 or more times per week along with yoga on most other days per week in to your exercise plan you can expect to see results n your first 4 to 6 weeks. The trick is to stick with it and make a real effort for consistency. Yoga along with rest, water, sleep, and other lifestyle changes can help you lose weight and keep it off. Just remember to perform it daily and follow along with a book, video, or audio material if you opt to do it at home, especially if you are a beginner.

Yoga works by stimulating the adrenal systems and helping to clear out your lymph and immune system of toxins. The release of pent up energy, the effects of the calmness yoga emphasizes, and by performing both aerobic and stretching, Hatha type yoga, you can get you strength, flexibility, and aerobic exercise all jut by practicing the different types of yoga styles. You will firm and tone muscles, burn calories, and boost your immune system and metabolism. Other effects are long lasting, such as calmness, poise, and balance. Most yogis know that regular yoga produces a glow and vibrant energy that tends to draw like minded people to you. (Anyone who practices yoga regularly is considered a yogi.)

If you have ever wanted to lose weight you may have found the wide array of methods and ideologies confusing. You may have wondered if you could lose it by dieting, pills, exercise, or other drastic measure alone. The answer is no! Losing weight takes a determined effort, willingness and patience, and the process of trying and combining methods to achieve what works best for you personally. In addition to lifestyle habits, dietary changes, and following the 5 key principles of a good lifestyle, yoga can help you achieve your goals.

Yog, According To Swami Ramdev

By Dr. Elizabeth Menon

He is neither the front man of a Rock 'N' Roll band nor he is a magician or an actor, but he has the looks, charisma, the body, movement and the capacity to alight an entire stadium with his presence. He doesn't stalk the stage like a panther, but mostly he sits in Padmasana or Vajrasana, except of course when he is worshiping the sun or walking on his hands! He does magical things with his abdomen, but only with the use of fresh air and a bit of muscle power. He is a celestial being completely detached from worldly pleasures and committed to serving the humanity; he has this great desire to change the world into a 'healthy world' with no illness. And how does he plan to do this? Just with the aid of controlled breathing and fresh air, otherwise known as Pranayam. In other words, this is Yoga, according to Swami Ramdev! He does not preach religion, but the divine power surrounds him like a halo and anyone who comes near him feels that power and draws on that infinite energy. In spite of all these attributes, this saint of a man, almost celestial is very humble but has the power to hold an audience in the palm of his hands by doing just a little Nouli! (For the un- initiated few, Nouli is the magical massaging movement of ones 'stomach')

If anyone is wondering if such a person exists, 'the saintly golden wonder from India', His Holiness Swami Ramdev who has transformed India to wake up to a healthy tomorrow, is the answer! Swami Ramdev was initiated in the ascetic order on the banks of the sacred River Ganga. He established Divya Yog Mandir Trust in 1995 with the help of Muktanand Maharaj and Acharya Balkrishen. His kindness, loving nature and dedication to serve humanity have won him an enormous following in India and all over the globe, just within a short span of 6-7 years! He is highly proficient in Ayurved and Vedic philosophy, Sanskrit and yog practice. Yog is an ancient Indian art that has been in practice for over 5000 years. But it was Saint Patanjali who compiled it so that the common man could understand it and called it the Ashtanga yog, the eight yogic practices, that brings about the positive way of thinking. Swami Ramdev follows in the footsteps of Maharshi Patanjali and he brought it to the masses, in the form of simple Pranayam and Asanas. Though Pranayam was known to be an essential part of Yog practice, it was seldom given the pride of place it deserved. Swami Ramdev can solely take the credit for changing the image of yog and its practice.

One must understand that Yog is not a religion and the word Om is not part of only the Hindu religion, but the Buddhists and Gregorian Monks used it as the sacred sound for chanting; Yog is oneness with the divine, a holistic approach to the art of living through commitment and understanding. It is paramount that everyone understands the real meaning of yog and the practice of its various techniques to correct the imbalance of prana (life force) and physique, which will then be reflected in the body, mind and intellect. Therefore, the presence of Swami Ramdev and his yog workshops in the UK was a blessing in deed. These workshops were of colossal magnitude, attended by people of multinational origin. Language was no barrier as Swami Ramdev is beyond any language; his presence was enough motivation for the adoring crowd and they followed his every single word and magical move!

Swami Ramdev was in total control of what went on at each session and he conducted it with such grandeur that, three hours of music, asanas, Pranayam, Ayurved and teaching of philosophy looked like only a few minutes! His wonderful sense of humour kept the audience captivated and Bastrika, kabhal-bhati, Anulom Vilom, Bahya Pranayam, Omkar japa, Bhramari and asanas were conducted like a well choreographed works of art. Though there are various methods of Pranayam and Asanas, Swami had selected seven methods of Pranayam that can be completed in about 20 minutes and a few highly useful Asanas, which would give maximum benefit. His unique wonderful sense of humor was evident at every session through the week.

The benefits are endless to those who complete these chosen exercises. Manipulation of breathing pattern will improve transmission of impulses resulting in functional changes leading to an increase in immunity and finally an evolved state of eternal bliss. Various systems in the body improve maintaining good health and treatment of ailments to those who are in poor health. Diseases like asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, allergy and Hay fever, migraine, diseases pertaining to lungs, heart and brain are cured by doing Pranayam, at least 5 to 15 minutes, twice daily ; improvement in Parkinsons disease, eye sight and memory also are noted; hair loss and premature graying are relieved by rubbing ones nails -- impulses are sent through the pressure points.

There were many patients in the audience at each venue who were completely cured of various ailments such as asthma, hypertension, migraine, diabetes, high cholesterol, hay fever, fibroid uterus, crohn's disease, skin conditions such as leucoderma, psoriasis, eczema, ovarian cysts, and improvement in nervous disorders. I was amazed at the revelations at the workshop I attended; there were even consultant physicians, surgeons and GPs who were disclosing details of cure among their relatives and patients. The unmistakable improvement in spinal ailments, paralysis and especially in PD (Parkinsons) was reassuring to many of the sufferers who attended the venue. Swami Ramdev, who brought Pranayam to the forefront, believes in 75%of Pranayam and 25% asanas to remain healthy and get rid of diseases, quite different to the earlier concept of Asanas being the main component and thereby giving Pranayam a subsidiary role!

It was overwhelming to witness the benefits of Pranayam in fibroid uterus, ovarian cysts, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, fibrosis of lungs, rheumatoid arthritis, frozen shoulder, migraine not responding to any treatment, various malignancies. Etc, narrated by the patients themselves in most instances, showing benefits within 4-9-12 months. (Graves disease, carcinoma of prostate and bladder were among the cases disclosed) These patients had the test results with them taken prior to starting Pranayam and during, at regular intervals. (Anulom Vilom, Kabhal bhati and Basthrika are most beneficial). Obesity showed remarkable improvement, loosing from 5- 11 kilograms and even up to 40 kilograms in a few, in 4-12 months! These revelations are quite difficult to believe until one has witnessed it and even I was skeptical in the beginning. His desire to meet all doctors attending the workshop was highly commendable; the conference was arranged where medico-legal points were discussed and the need for evidence-based medicine was stressed. Most doctors were of the opinion that publication of data from Swami Ramdev's clinical trials is of paramount importance.

The benefits and the real meaning of Kabhal Bhati (glow on the fore head/ healthy glow) were quite evident on Swami Ramdev! I could not help thinking that one does not need to go to a gym to get a perfect body, just one look at the 'treasure chest of India' was enough to convince anyone that he is a living advertisement for Pranayam, to achieve the 'perfect triangle' and the tummy to die for! (no disrespect to Swami, of course). Swami Ramdev believes that spinal and joint injuries with the careless use of weights at a gym could be avoided among youngsters, by practicing Asanas and Pranayam. His kindness and empathy with each person at the venue was unmistakable and the blessing he bestowed on each of those who were suffering was ecstatic to witness. His captivating mannerisms, his charisma and the way his arm goes up in the air when he wants to stress a point, almost a 'Mercurial gesture', reminded me of the Rock 'N' Roll legend with an inimitable voice! Swami's extensive and thorough knowledge of allopathic medicine, acupressure and Ayurved only add to his greatness as a Yogic Master.

How To Avoid Back Pain When At The Computer - 1

By Glen Wood

Office workers spend a good chunk of their time hunched over a computer pounding away trying to beat those ever-pressing deadlines.

Each day, over 100,000 Americans suffer from lower back pain. Lifting heavy objects incorrectly, sitting still at work or at a computer for long periods, poor posture, or even sleeping in the wrong position can all contribute to lower back pain.

Furthermore, psychological stress can have as one of its consequences physical pain, and one of the places this pain tends to manifest is in the back.

There are many ways to treat this pain: medicines, chiropractic and massage therapy, and bed rest being some of them. All of these therapies are valuable, and no alternative remedy is a substitute for proper medical care.

However, practicing certain yoga techniques can complement traditional therapy, and can greatly alleviate, or even eliminate, lower back pain.

Something simple you could try. A popular and easy yoga pose to prevent back pain is called the Cobra. If you have seen a cobra at the zoo, keep that image in mind.

Lay flat on your stomach placing your palms down on the ground either underneath of the shoulders or just wider than the shoulders. Keep your body relaxed, with elbows back and out. Raise your body allowing the back to arch and hold this pose for 10 to 15 seconds. If you feel uncomfortable, use your elbows instead of hands and it will give your body a gentler stretch.

This will stretch the abdominal muscles while the back muscles are relaxing. Slowly lower the upper part of your body to the ground.

Yoga helps alleviate lower back pain by strengthening the muscles of the lower back, making strains less likely to occur. Yoga also stretches the muscles, allowing them to elongate and relax, and alleviating tension.

Regular yoga practice also improves posture, relieving back pain by keeping the spine in proper alignment. The following are three yoga asanas, or postures, which can help in stretching and strengthening the lower back. These postures can be practiced singularly, or as a flowing series.

Cobra is just one. While at your computer try this. Place your bottom in close to the chair back, try to get your shoulder blades over the back of the chair, next as you exhale with your arms folded overhead gently lean back over the chair. Use your breath to deepen the pose.

Back Pain Free With Driving Yoga - Part 5

By Glen Wood

While driving, for those with Carpal Tunnel Deviation, try keeping your wrists fluid and letting your elbows drop slightly. Always keep in mind to 'go where you feel the most control', driving safely and loosen up with a little Yoga from time to time.

When appropriate, interlacing the fingers of the hands and stretch them out in front of you keeping the arms straight as much as you can, this will help release tension in the neck, shoulders, fingers and wrists. With your car stopped and outside your car you can take the hands overhead and back. A little bit stronger but it does help to reduce tension.

A few warning signs of driver fatigue:

 Yawning

 Poor Concentration

 Tired Eyes

 Restlessness

 Drowsiness

 Slow Reactions

 Boredom

 Over steering

A Few Yoga suggestions for fighting fatigue while driving:

1. Practice some conscious breathing. Studies have shown that just be breathing more fully you increase mental clarity and energy. So, sit up a little straighter and let your breath drop into your belly. When you exhale, start low and release your breath all the way up through your nose.

2. Try Jiggling! It's a small, shaking that moves from your hips and up into your lower back. I wouldn't recommend it after a big Thanksgiving meal, but Jiggling slightly can be a great pick-me-up.

3. At stoplights you can get more energy moving by doing Spinal Twists: Keep your foot firmly on the brake and hips facing forward. Take a breath and on the exhale reach across your body with your left hand to grasp the edge of the right seat, gently twisting your upper torso to the right. Let your head follow the twist, looking over your shoulder at your friends in the back! Your right hand can hold in between the seats for greater leverage. Then at the next light, do the same in reverse twisting to the left.

When I'm tired I also notice that my emotions run more negative. I'm harder on myself and those around me. It can lead to more frustration at my fellow travelers out on the road. The holidays are traditionally the most stressful time of the year with pent up expectations and tensions.

This can also lead to impatience and frustration at the added traffic. Working to keep an eye on the bigger picture can help. We're all in this together with Thanksgiving being the busiest traffic holiday. So, cut yourself and your fellow travelers a little slack, finding the generosity of the season and giving thanks that we have the freedom of mobility when many do not, will help things stay in perspective.

Keep breathing deeply and stretching often.

We give thanks to www.DrivetimeYoga.com with the help of this article.

Yoga - How To Prevent Injuries When Practicing Yoga

By Bertil Hjert

Practicing yoga is extremely beneficial to one's health. It is a unique and wonderful form of exercise existing for more than centuries now.

However, most beginners and sometimes the experienced tend to worry about yoga injuries that strike practitioners. Back injuries are very common when practicing certain asanas or postures, especially in the area of back bends.

These common injuries can be easily prevented if you focus on certain principles of movement.

Here are eight most important principles of movement to be followed in order to prevent jamming and ensure smooth and easy movement while practicing yoga:

1. Make sure that you get enough of relaxation via breathing and connecting.

2. You need to start the movement at the spine area.

3. Try to connect spinal movement with moving through the largest joints while initiating.

4. You should focus more on moving your joints through their best possible range of motion.

5. Try to create good stability via enhancing breathing process.

6. You need to be more relaxed and resilient while practicing yoga.

7. You need to be quite generous with yourself and then move through your range of motion that's pain-free.

8. Don't focus on more in less time and strain your body. Less is more.

Here are some of the other important principles recommended by the experts for back bends. You should follow these principles of back bends while practicing yoga to prevent back injuries and ensure safe practicing.

a) Relax

Accomplishing a back bend is very easy. All you require to do is to move through the weak links of the spine. This also makes it vulnerable to create injury and dysfunction. In order to focus on a functional and balanced body, you need to be completely aware of the movement.

Always try to breathe and relax prior to moving into any back bend. If you are relaxed, it will enhance your awareness and also facilitates tighter and tenser areas of the body in order to release and allow you to move freely. This will also allow you to enjoy inner cues of what is working and what's not on the surface.

b) Start extension at the upper spine

You must extend your spine to experience a back bend. If you don't extend your spine, there will be no back bend. The best spinal extension is only possible if you start at the upper spine.

Move your upper spine first and then maintain the depth of the pose that's associated to the movement that occurs at the upper portion of spine. Here you will not move through the weak links and jam the lower back. The result is no back or neck pain.

c) Release the chest

It is important to know that sometimes it is difficult to start movement at the upper part of spine due to the tightness in the chest. You need to focus on the tightness of the chest and use the back of the shoulders.

d) Pelvic stability

Emphasize on pelvic stability outward. It helps in developing good amount of solid core suitability. Start at the pelvis and radiates the spine and down towards the toes. This is absolutely necessary if you want to experience good amount of ease, strength and freedom in your back bend.

Why Is Yoga Identic With Women?

By Hengky Ongko

When we join a yoga class, you must agree that above 80% the members are women. Men always consider that yoga is for women. As we know yoga is designed to anyone who wants to get health not only women but also men. There are a lot of benefits by practicing yoga including if we want to build up our muscles. And have you noticed 50 % of yoga teachers and yoga masters are male.
But for a man who wants to concentrate on building up muscles, they think yoga is too feminine as an activity and they won't be able to build muscles by practicing yoga. Actually, a man can develop some muscles on his arms and his upper body had firmed up after practicing yoga for only about two months. I suggest you to hold some pose such as chaturanga (plank pose) and vasishtasana (side plank pose) for several minutes every time when you practice. Of course each individual has his own body type and so one case may be different from another. Plus there are also other factors like one's diet, discipline and overall lifestyle.

I encourage every man to just try doing yoga. Everyone has his own goal in choosing an activity. But before you judge, figure out first the benefits you would get in doing yoga. It doesn't make you less of a man when you do yoga. Yoga has a lot of benefits than harm. You can also reduce your stress and tone up your muscles.

One more question: Have you noticed 50 % of yoga teachers and yoga masters are male? So what are you waiting for? Join and practice yoga for your health.

Back Pain Free With Driving Yoga Part 4

By Glen Wood

When getting out of bed, don't even dare trying quick movements. Instead, you should slowly edge your way to the side of the bed and then push yourself up with your arms. That way you don't use your back muscles as much.

Yoga exercises will help you improve your lung capacity, deepen your connection with gravity, and lengthen your spine. You will learn to harness gravity as a positive contributor to functional movement.

You will open the breathing apparatus and give the nervous system and adrenal glands that contribute to stress and the fight or flight response a break and access the parasympathetic nervous system, so that important tasks such as digestion and improved immune function can take place.

By lengthening the spine you will improve your posture and alignment throughout the body for greater ease and less muscular tension.

"Regular exposure to whole-body vibration over many months or years can lead to damage and back pain. The longer you are exposed and the higher the level of whole-body vibration, the greater the chances of you suffering a back injury," HSE writes. "Once you begin to suffer back pain, continued exposure to vibration is likely to make the pain worse."

Once a herniation, always a herniation. Intervertebral discs function to cushion the spine and absorb shock. A herniated disc is essentially a disc with a hole in it. In a herniation, the annulus fibrosis (the tough outer membrane of the disc) is breached, and the softer, inner membrane (the nucleus pulposis) extrudes. Pain occurs when the extrusion comes into contact with a nerve.

Obviously taught and prepared by somebody that has never experienced lower back pain. Yes, yoga in general is good for spinal health.

Research in just the last ten years, based on new imaging techniques has shown, revealing a new model of spinal health that is not straight or rigid, but flexible, plastic and curved.

Why Yoga Works for Fitness

By Jay Freeman

3 Reasons Why Yoga Works for Fitness

As many Americans become interested in yoga training, many want to know why yoga works so well for transforming the human body from flabby and soft to sculpted and tone. Below are three reasons why yoga is such a good choice for physical fitness.

Unity of Body Mind and Soul

Many yoga enthusiasts credit the concept of unity as the number one reason why yoga works so well to keep both our physical and spiritual selves in great condition. The goal of yoga training is to bring the body and the soul together in a connection with a higher power.

The Spinal Connection

Many common forms of yoga center on the flexibility of the spine and its connection to all the body's systems. Many believe yoga works as a fitness solution because of this spinal connection. Yoga training influences cerebrospinal fluid, the cushioning fluid around our spinal systems which is responsible for sending signals to all the other systems (digestion, circulation, etc.) in our bodies.

Whole Body Strength

Another reason why experts believe that yoga works for physical and spiritual health is that yoga training requires the use of the entire body when performed correctly. From head to toe, yoga movements are feats of concentration and control.

If you're interested in finding out if yoga works for you, find a class to improve your physical and mental well-being through yoga training.

By Jay Freeman

If you are interested in yoga classes, selecting a center for yoga and yoga apparel are important for getting started. Below you will find helpful tips for helping you select the best center for yoga and yoga apparel for you.

Choosing a center for yoga can be a difficult choice to make. For most physical fitness regimens, including yoga, experts recommend choosing a center for yoga or gym that is convenient enough to ensure that you will attend regularly. After all, fighting traffic to get to the gym could be just discouraging enough to skip it all together.

In addition there are other factors you may want to consider when selecting a yoga center, including the following:

  1. Does the center offer a ladies day or other option for women who want to practice yoga without concern over the opposite sex?

  2. What are the center's hours during the week and on the weekend? Will the hours work for your schedule?

  3. What is the cost? Are there cancellation fees or contracts involved?

After choosing a yoga center, you'll want to find some great yoga apparel that will help you look good and remain comfortable during your workouts. Here are a few tips for selecting yoga apparel.

  1. Your yoga clothing should allow you to move freely.

  2. Yoga workout clothes should be loose fitting enough to be comfortable, but form fitting enough to allow your instructor to see your form during poses.

  3. Yoga workout clothes should help you feel good about yourself. Great-looking yoga apparel will boost your confidence in those first awkward classes at your center for yoga.

Is an Online Yoga Teacher Certification Reputable?

By Paul Jerard

What are employers looking for in a newly-hired Yoga instructor? The needs of employers are straight forward: Any facility, which hires a Yoga teacher, is looking for safety, competence, and certification. When considering a Yoga teacher training program, a prospective intern must consider the depth of the course in the above-mentioned areas.

Online Yoga teacher courses are an outgrowth of recent technology and the demand for affordable training options. Home study programs exist for aspirants, who want to advance, and deepen their knowledge, in any given aspect of Yoga.

At a time when most new Yoga instructors are teaching a few hours per week, who wants to spend the monetary equivalent of college tuition to earn part-time wages? It is a fact that most instructors begin teaching Yoga on a part-time basis.

This is the most conservative approach toward breaking in to a new field, while you continue to earn your full time income. Although you may have been participating in Yoga for years, it is not the same as teaching classes, marketing, networking, advertising, and all that entails a small business.

If you find the concept of a business to be offensive, the best option to take is working for someone else as an independent contractor or a part-time employee. In this way, you work for an agreed rate and do not have to be concerned with expanding your student base; that is, unless your student participation suddenly drops, and the facility cannot afford to keep you on.

Sometimes, companies cut back programs permanently, or temporarily, during a slow season. Therefore, if you are teaching Yoga, you have a vested interest in learning all you can about marketing, networking, advertising, and business skills, to keep your classes going.

This is why most veteran Yoga teachers do their best to learn many skills that apply to the business world. There is also the choice to operate as a non-profit, but you still have to file taxes and make sure you are within the guidelines of the law.

Now, let's get back to: Is an Online Yoga Teacher Certification Reputable? In short, yes, it is, as long as you become certified to teach. Make sure you will receive a teacher's diploma upon successful completion of your course. Of course, safety, competence, and some basic business survival skills, are a pre-requisite to a comprehensive course, which would prepare you for the world of teaching Yoga.

Do you still feel that business and Yoga is not a good mix? Consider this: Some Yoga teacher graduates have spent over ten thousand dollars for their training. In the process, they never learn anything to prepare for interviews or business survival. There is no harm in preparing for success as a certified Yoga teacher.

The Yoga - Pilates Debate - Which is Better?

By Jay Freeman

Practitioners of yoga and Pilates alike have long engaged in the yoga Pilates debate- as they try to decide which one is more beneficial. This article will highlight a few benefits of each discipline so that you can decide which the better choice is for you.

First, let's take a look at yoga in our study of the yoga Pilates debate. The ultimate goal of yoga is to bring the body mind and soul together. There are many different types of yoga, with each one focusing on specific and unique benefits for the body and soul. Yoga, unlike Pilates, is considered by many to be a way healing the body through unity and "oneness" with the earth. Yoga is physically demanding and requires complete focus.

Now, let's take a look at Pilates as it applies to the yoga Pilates discussion. Although it requires great concentration of both mind and body, Pilates is considered to be more physical and less spiritual by many. In the ongoing yoga Pilates debate, some consider Pilates to be more physically demanding because of the incorporation of machines, and the strengthening of the body's trunk, which consists of the abdomen, lower back and buttocks.

Often individuals who cannot choose their favorite decide to practice a little of both disciplines. If you still cannot make up your mind in the great yoga Pilates debate, try Pilates and yoga on alternating days until one emerges as your personal favorite.

Knee And Back Pain With The Help Of Yoga Part 5

By Glen Wood

With gentle exercise the body will start to heal and recover, the more you put in the more you get out. It can be a very fine line where to draw between working too much or working too little. When you are exercising, it is ok to be 'agreeably uncomfortable'. This is where you decide to draw that line.

Be aware that the ego will kick in and tell you to do more and as a result you will feel pain. You will need to control the ego.

Resistance work can also be useful for issues with knee pain and other areas of the body. For instance with knees where key hole surgery is about to take place. This is what happened to me. A couple of months before my operation this is what I did with the help of my osteopath to a quick recovery.

For this you will need a pair of socks tied together with a pebble in each. The pebble will need to be about half a pound in weight.

While sat on a chair, wrap the socks which are tied together over the ankle of the affected knee. Then keeping your back straight on an exhalation begin to start to straighten the leg bringing it to the horizontal plane of the thigh. And breathing in on the way down. Try reversing this when your ready.

Just to start with, do a dozen or so up and down movements, to get the 'feel' of the exercise. Later you can start to refine this by taking the heel away from the body and the toes coming back to you with the knee pulled up 'gently'. Doing this a few times a day will prepare the knee and ligaments for surgery and towards a swift recovery.

Continue to do your yoga practice, it will pay you dividends. You will become stronger, more flexible, calmer with an overall wellness of being on all levels. The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels will become heightened and you will become more aware of you body. (You also start to see changes in others as you become more 'tuned in'). When you start to work 'within' you can start to work on the 'outside'. Most do it the other way round.

Your body is a vehicle getting you from A to B, so it makes sense to 'service' your body regularly to keep it in top shape.
